The back is generally green, and it has the characteristic of changing color to brown pattern depending on the surrounding environment. This is a form of camouflage using pigment cells, which plays an important role in protecting themselves from predators in its natural habitat. At the tips of its toes, there are adhesive pads or mucous glands that generate suction, allowing it to easily climb surfaces. The breeding season is from May to June, during which it lays eggs in the water. From October, it hibernates under rocks or in the ground.
