In February and March, they migrate to the water to breed. After breeding, the toads rest for about a month in nearby grass or underground, entering a state of spring hibernation. They have plump, rough skin, covered with bumps, which helps them adapt well to their environment.
When a predator appears, they secrete toxin called bufotoxin from the poison glands in their skin to defend themselves, or they puff up and stretch out their legs to display themselves. By doing so, they make themselves appear larger and more threatening to avoid being attacked.
