Common red stag beetle (Prosopocoilus astacoides blanchardi)


In Korea, it is known as an insect that inhabits on Jeju Island and is designated as a Class Ⅱ endangered wildlife.

The part that looks like pincers is not the mouth but the mandible, which is particularly large in males. The mandible resembles the antlers of a stag, hence the name stag beetle, and in the past it was also called a pincer beetle depending on the region.

The Common red stag beetle is characterized by two black spots on either side of the thoracic plate and is the only domestic stag beetle to have a light tan coloration.
