Overview

개요

The National Institute of Ecology (NIE) is a facility for ecological research, exhibitions, and education, allowing visitors to experience five major climates such as tropical, desert, Mediterranean, temperate, and polar climates as well as the ecology of the Korean Peninsula with animals and plants inhabiting those areas. NIE aims to increase national competitiveness by leading domestic/overseas ecological research, contribute to environmental preservation and raise environmental awareness by offering various opportunities to experience and learn about the ecology.

The number of endangered species keeps increasing due to reckless damage to the ecosystem and the climate change is negatively affecting the environment. Thus, the National Institute of Ecology (NIE), institution designed to do research on restoration of the ecosystem and develop relevant technologies, has been established in Seocheon, Chungnam

  • 창틀난방 시스템
    Ecorium effectively maintains the indoor temperatures by circulating hot water, approximately 38℃, around the window frames of a greenhouse. This reduces energy by 30% compared to other systems and creates an environment suitable for growth with effective heating. Moreover, even during the summer, the circulation of water around the window frames can reduce temperature rises and thermal expansion of the structures.

  • 자연친화 하수처리 시스템
    The water circulation center is an environmentally friendly advanced wastewater treatment system. Wastewater passes through an area where air is supplied or not by natural ventilation, allowing hazardous substances to be eliminated by microorganisms.

  • 우수와 중수의 재활용
    NIE does not allow wastage of water. Sewage or wastewater is recycled by the heavy water treatment system, and rainwater collected from the roofs, is used for trees within NIE. The rainwater storage tank can hold up to 1,600 tons of water. Contaminated rainwater is discharged by the filtration system and only clean rainwater is kept in the tank.

  • 천장복사패널 냉난방 시스템
    The ceiling radiation panel cooling/radiation system is a technology of reducing cooling/heating load by using hot/cool water connected with geothermal heat. Utilizing the radiation generated by the temperature difference between indoor air and the ceiling panels, the system reduces dust and suspended matter as well as particulate matter and noises, significantly improving the quality of indoor air. Ecorium uses the system for frost removal and indoor heating during winter.

  • 지열히트펌프
    NIE's research building and Ecorium use a geothermal heat pump to save cooling/heating energy. The geothermal heat, generated ten meters underground and maintained at approximately 15℃ all through the year, is a great source of a heat source and limitless renewable energy. The geothermal heat exchanger can be used semi-permanently without generating exhaust or polluting underground water.

  • 바이오매스(Bio-mass)보일러
    A lignocellulosic biomass boiler is used for creating a space of resource circulation. The boiler can reduce use of fossil fuel and use lignocellulosic biomass such as waste wood in supplying cooling, heating, or hot water, significantly saving energy and reducing air pollutants or greenhouse gases.

  • 패시브(Passive)하우스 디자인
    The concept of a passive house, using a pressure difference of air in order to generate natural ventilation or roofs whose thickness is twice thicker than the one considered to be standard according to the applicable building act, has been introduced to NIE's buildings such as the main office and guest house so as to save energy. The concept includes green roofs, exterior shading, double skin envelope, heat exchanger, and high air tightness as well.

  • 액티브 솔라 시스템
    NIE uses an active solar system in order to generate and supply hot water with solar heat.

    지붕형 태양광발전시스템
    Solar cells, made of semiconductors and mounted on the roof, generate power for NIE buildings. The system is based on photoelectronic effects, which generate electrons on the surface of modules that absorb sunlight.
